Planning Your Trip To Alaska:

Alaska is a favorite destination for lots of people.  Our summers are very short in comparison to most everywhere… So, it is best to make your reservations as early as possible.

We are very proud of our local airlines – Alaska Airlines – and they fly in from many cities throughout the US including Chicago, Boston and Orlando.  Alaska Airlines will work with you to facilitate your connections to Fairbanks.

Fairbanks, Alaska is served by not only Alaska Airlines, but we have flights arriving daily through Northwest Airlines.  You can also connect to these airlines through Anchorage, which is served by most major airlines.

Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, and though we have all of the requisite services of a “City”, we pride ourselves in being a small “Community” with a true frontier spirit.  After all, we still have quite a few sourdoughs who come to town with their “poke” of gold to make a deposit in our banks.

Fairbanks boasts

Gateway to the Interior

   Head out for adventure.

Fairbanks is your gateway to Alaska’s vast Interior and expansive Arctic. Head north to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Access the North Slope or the Arctic Circle. Visit Barrow, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass, Galena, Coldfoot, Beaver, Ruby, Bettles and the Yukon River.

Head south to
Denali by a 4-hour leisurely train ride or short 2-hour drive. Auto rentals, air and ground transportation, guided eco-tours, fishing and boat charters and wildlife tours can be arranged through professional outfitters. Make Fairbanks your base camp as you explore rural villages, see caribou migrations and polar bear, hike in rugged mountains, float mighty rivers and fly-fish remote streams.

"I feel most at home in the wild mountain ranges bordering Interior
Alaska to the north and south. In the Alaska Range to the south, I love to climb and experience its cold beauty of rock, snow and ice and the powerful forces that shape them. The elemental   More...

   Fun Facts

  • The Arctic Circle is the latitude where the sun doesn't set for one day at summer solstice (June 20 or 21) and doesn't rise for one day at winter solstice
    (December 21 or 22).
  • The Interior is characterized by large rivers in broad valleys in the central part of Alaska. Climatic extremes mean colder winters and warmer summers than in other regions of the state. As far as the eye can see, there are expansive forests of birch, aspen and spruce.

Winter brings consistent snow conditions from November through March. Winter temperatures average 8°F to -19°F; summer temperatures rise into the 70s and 80s.

For updated weather reports visit www.arh.noaa.gov.

   Fun Facts

  • Fewer clouds in Interior Alaska than elsewhere in the state means more warming by the sun during the long days of summer.
  • Sundogs are "mock suns" seen as bright, rainbow-hued spots on opposite sides of the winter sun.
  • Chinooks are unseasonably warm winds that occur in the middle of winter.
  • Precipitation is light in Alaska's Interior as air masses lose their moisture crossing the Alaska Range to the south.

Air

The Fairbanks International Airport is close to downtown
Fairbanks with shuttles, rental cars, taxi transfers and occasional bus service available. Alaska Airlines (year-round) (www.alaskaair.com) and Northwest Airlines (summer seasonal) (www.nwa.com) offer daily direct flights from Fairbanks to the Lower 48. Several regional and commuter carriers provide air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior rural communities as well as Anchorage and Canada. Also, Thomas Cook/Condor, Germany's largest leisure-oriented airline, provides weekly summer service between Fairbanks and Frankfurt.

Rail

The last full-service railroad in the
United States, the Alaska Railroad, provides daily summer service and weekend winter service between Fairbanks and Anchorage. Summer service includes stops in Denali for visitors to take advantage of activities. Log on to www.alaskarailroad.com for complete schedules and pricing.

Alaska's Marine Highway

The Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating year-round since 1963, with regularly scheduled passenger and vehicle service to 30 communities in
Alaska, plus Bellingham, Washington, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Visitors can access Alaska - the Inside Passage, Southeast and Southwest, the Aleutian Islands and the Alaska Peninsula by one of the nine vessels in the AMHS fleet. Passenger and vehicle capacity as well as amenities such as staterooms, food service and observation lounges vary on each ship. A popular trip for travelers is to continue north via motorhome to Fairbanks and Denali.

For more information, visit www.alaska.gov/ferry

Ground

Shuttle service companies provide daily scheduled transportation throughout
Alaska and the Yukon. Statewide charter services can also be arranged. Autos, trucks, vans and motorhomes can be rented at a number of convenient locations.

Around Town

Rental cars, shuttles and taxis are available in addition to the Fairbanks North Star Borough MACS Transit Bus System that offers free bus rides from
November 1, 2002 through March 31, 2003. If you have a car or want to catch the bus, you can make use of the brand-new $8.3 million 380-space Downtown Transportation Center and Parking Garage in the heart of Fairbanks. For one dollar an hour, you can park and walk around downtown. The Log Cabin Visitor Information Center is within walking distance and has information on attractions, shopping, dining, lodging and services. Pick up a copy of the Fairbanks Self-Guided Downtown Walking Tour to explore the past and present of Fairbanks.

Last Frontier

Look no further to find it.

Look no further to explore the great outdoors just minutes from town for a wide range of hiking trails for a casual stroll or a challenging hike. Explore a bit further and you can join the action with mountain biking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, snowmobiling, dog mushing, skiing, camping, fishing, hunting and backpacking. Cast a line for the voracious Arctic grayling, a species nearly extinct today in the rest of the United States. Wildlife is one of Alaska’s greatest treasures with many species that inhabit the land, the lakes, rivers and endless sky.

Remember your binoculars to get those close-up views of geese, ducks, cranes and swans at Creamer’s Field, a migratory bird refuge less than five minutes from downtown. Binoculars are also a good tip for Denali National Park and other wilderness areas to bring into view moose, caribou, Dall sheep and grizzly bear. Whatever the season, whatever your interests, Fairbanks as a destination offers activities from mild to wild.

"...because I can't ever remember a time when I wasn't drawn to visit
Alaska. To me, Alaska means adventure . . . of witnessing the aurora, of braving cold temperatures, of experiencing a landscape so foreign, yet familiar . . .

Mary Beth McKenna, winter visitor and Alaskan ambassador

   Fun Facts

  • Duct Tape is a versatile source of repair used by many Alaskans. You can use it to repair a ripped parka or broken fishing rod, repair a hole in your canoe or kayak, hold together a snowmobile cowling, or remove sled dog hair from your good clothes. It can be purchased in quantities locally.
  • Diamond Willow are diamond-shaped patterns in some willow trees caused by fungi, typically found and abundant in river valleys, like the Tanana Valley. Once stripped of its bark, diamond willow is used to make items such as lamps and walking sticks found in local gift shops.
